PurDon't!

Oh yeah, how about that... we forgot to post an article about last weeks game! That might have something to do with our offense forgetting to show up against PurDon't. Before the unspectacular victory, Home Base had a pretty good tailgate. It seemed to be family day as everyone and their mom showed up, literally. The Koos, Baron, and Kernen lineage were all representing. Bob, aka "Bob Baron" and his son dominated the corn hole circuit as the Koos and Kernens represented as they usually do.

Combined catering from Hoggies and City BBQ made the food selection excellent to go along with great music and a great Red River Rivalry. The THAT GUY/GIRL award goes to Ma Kernen for her dance moves, great music selection, and futile attempt to play a card game with no card table... or cards?!. How do you play "asshole" with no cards you might ask? "Doesn't mattah... DRINK" says Ma Kernen. Indeed, we will drink to that.

The only other newsworthy event was the takeover of the original Home Base tailgate location. In a rare hostile takeover, a slew of lesbians actually beat the Home Base forefathers to their tailgating location. The surprise move caused even more unrest when these Parking Lot Pirates then left and failed to return until after 11:00. The intruders needed Home Base to help them set up their tents, they ran out of gas for their generator and invaded our new tailgate spot to watch the game, and then they left all of their trash behind, as well as their grill. They did all of this with a smile though so, uh Cheers!

The good that came out of this though is the new spot (which is about 15 feet east of the original) actually seemed to provide a bit more cover from the alcohol police. It also provided more shade and thus less glare on the TV. The location of the PSU game has yet to be determined, but it will certainly be in one of those two parking spots. Both are prime, and the party will be most excellent in either.

Finally, this is the last plug (no promises) for the Illinois road trip. The bus and hotel have been secured so at this point anyone interested is bonus. There are about 7 spots available. Hotel/Transportation/Tickets/Booze/Some Food provided. Email Mike Baron for more info.

Also, just a note that donations are appreciated not only for the food, but also to help pay for the tents, stereo, gas for the generator, and perhaps a new TV for next year. Everyone is invited and nobody needs to bring anything, but hey, if I have some extra loot in my pocket, who knows what could happen. If we ever do have proceeds from donations, they go towards making the tailgate better for the following week. We have had great success this year and we would love to keep this going.

Back On Top

Home Base was back in action with a home game against Minnesota. In the first week of Big 10 action and the first week that Beanie and Pryor played in the same backfield, the Home Base and Buckeye faithful showed up ready to roll. With the four tent fortress in tact, we welcomed some new faces to the crowd and started the Big 10 season off with some excellent pulled pork from City BBQ. The most encouraging news, however, was that much like the Buckeyes on the field, we finally had all of our tailgating assets in working order for the game. After several attempts, we retired the Craigslist generator and brought in a new power source.

With everything in place, the day started off with the Best Damn Corn Hole Game Ever Played. Adam "Liquor's Quicker" and Donna "Half Ounce" Koos barely edged "The Kaptain" Kurt Kernen and Mike "Beer" Baron in a marathon game that featured the most points scored in the history of corn hole (according to the Guinness Book of OSU Home Base Records). In a sea saw battle of titanic proportions, Baron and Kernen followed up with two straight victories to take the series.

With the battle of Corn Hole supremacy taken care of and the flow of beer reaching a screaming pace, Home Base saw some interesting high drama that included some good tackling, beer cup slapping, and the old pull-the-chair-out-from-someone-as-they're-sitting-down trick. Coach Tressel was quoted after the game as saying, "Gee I think that's the most beer I've ever seen spilled at a tailgate party. I'd like to see some better protection as the season goes on from everyone."

The THAT GUY award goes to Jason "Dale Jr." Conner for wearing a heavy amount of a new cologne that just came out called, Coors Light. Chicks dig it! Aaron "Dad" Wiegand gets the "Wing Man" award for helping Conner apply the new cologne by yanking the chair out from under him as he sat down.

In other news, there are still seats available for the Home Base trip to Illinois. Please contact Mike Baron at mbaron (at) studentlife.osu.edu for more information. Illinois and Penn State are currently scaring the crap out of me with their offense so it should not only be a fun time outside the stadium, but should be a great game inside as well. Hopefully Illinois both teams can rack up some quality wins now that m*ch*g@n and Purdon't decided to screw up our strength of schedule.

T. Smith....err, uh....Pryor....

In what turned out to be a very weak showing by the fans in Ohio Stadium - the first time in YEARS that I remember seeing empty seats in the 'shoe - the Buckeyes were invigorated with the birth of a new quarterback.

I have to be honest, I never had faith in Pryor throwing the ball yet. It scared me to death to think of him performing anywhere outside the "Tebow-ish run-it-on-3rd-down" scheme. However, he proved me wrong - and he proved all the dreamers right, breaking the record for the most TD's passed by a freshman in OSU history.......come to think of it, no Freshman has ever thrown this many TD's in a season. At 10-16 and 139 yards passing, I'd say that's a pretty good start for a QB we get to count on for at least three years anyway.

Moving on, our O-Line played a little better, but we have to remember this was Troy, not USC.......or MinnieSota.......or Wisconsin. So, we can't give them too much credit yet. It's just a good thing that Tressel is not playing the "seniors get to play first" game anymore, otherwise, we wouldn't have a QB that can compensate for our lack of O-Line and get away from the DL as they peel off our blockers.

Finally (trying to keep this short), I'll finish with the Defense. If you're not worried, stop drinking whatever it is that has your thoughts distorted. If anyone wants to know why it is that we've got such a packed set of talent on the D-side of the field, but can't seem to tackle, I think we need to turn to our defensive coaching. While it's ultimately up to the players to execute on the field when the plays are called, if the coaches don't set the right schemes, then they can't be in the correct position to make the plays - or at least, they're behind the 8-ball from the get-go.

I'm hoping our defensive coaching staff can start calling plays from something other than "headlight paper with crayon written on it."

Another cupcake victory

In a surprise move, Jim Tressel played Terrell Pryor for all but two snaps against an overmatched Troy team. With the young phenom in the game, the Buckeyes still looked pedestrian as the game was within Troy's reach going into the fourth quarter.

In similar fashion, Home Base was also sort of a pedestrian tailgate party. Not as many people arrived full of Buckeye spirit after the sour and deflating loss to USC. Home Base did unveil some new tailgating firepower though with the four squared Buckeye Fortress Tent Formation. We did have to use one blue tent, so we hung an OSU flag on the side to prevent the colors from tainting the esteemed look of the fortress.

We had some high quality burgers and brats along with the tailgating staples. To answer some of the requests we got during the party, no you cannot bring the cheese dip home with you. It will not end well for anyone.

Dale Jr. made a strong run at the THAT GUY award for the forth consecutive week. With two alcohol related offenses under his belt, Dale decided drink his beer through a straw in cans, which he placed inside of a clear plastic cup to conceal the beverage. Jr. was lucky no officers of good taste were around to arrest him for an illegal beer drinking procedure.

The award for THAT GUY however narrowly goes to the Beer Baron. After taking it relatively easy on the day, he was convinced to take several jello shots, then he beat his wife... in a chugging contest. After the overmatched victory, Baron was challenged by a true performer of this tailgate season, Mr. Dale Jr. himself. In this battle of beer drinking titans, Baron and Dale Jr. were in a dead heat... until they started chugging. Beer Baron demolished Dale Jr. in a way that we were expecting Ohio State to dominate Troy. After the victory which will be on youtube soon, he was off to the game.

Please remember that there are still available tickets for the Home Base road trip to see Ohio State win a road game at Illinois. If interested, please contact Mike Baron at mbaron(at)studentlife.osu.edu.

This Just In

Banana Buckeye has been officially named THAT GIRL for the first game against YSU, not that she remembers who we played.

In an honorable move, Dale Jr., declined the award and recommended someone more deserving.... much like Ohio University decided to hand the football to Ohio State University four times in last week's game in an attempt to allow the more deserving team to win.

As Jim Tressel put it, week 2 on campus was what one might expect the game after the opener and before the marquis match up. The game was an overall victory, but some progress that needed to be made straight up did not occur.....
