Problem Solved: Split FBS into 2 divisions

If Ohio State had TCU or Boise State’s schedule during the BCS era, they would go undefeated in the regular season. Every. Single. Year. Mark it down. Highlight it. Take a picture of it. Seal the note and the picture of it in an envelope and send it to Grandma. Call Grandma and tell her to expect something. Every. Single. Year. Even the Steve Belisarri led 2001 team with a drunk quarterback playing the first quarter of each game probably would have run the table.

Ok, “mid-major team fan”. Even if I’m wrong (and a couple times the Buckeyes get upset by some powerhouse little team on the schedule) should Ohio State have been allowed to go to the National Championship game each year they DID go undefeated under this scenario?? Probably 10, 11, or 12 times during the 12 year history of the BCS? Well, if you don’t think so, then any reasonable person would say your mid-major team shouldn’t be allowed to go either. Life isn’t fair. Baby sea lions get eaten by killer whales every single day. And yes. Sometimes mid-major schools go undefeated and don’t get to play for the national title. Seems unbearable for many. But read on. I have the solution.

Split the FBS into FBS Division 1 and FBS Divison 2. In every state that I know of, there are several different divisions in high school sports. In Ohio football, 5 divisions exist. Occasionally, is there a team in Division II that might be able to beat every team in Division 1? Of course. But no one seems to complain too much about it. Everyone seems to be happy with a separate division championship, as teams like the 50 person per class Cuyahoga Heights Redskins get to compete for a title and make Sportscenter when their principal rushes the field and tackles the team after a game tying score.

So here’s the plan. We have 5 or 6 “FBS Division 1″ conferences and the rest are “Division 2″, with their own championship system. In addition, conferences in Division 1 must play each other pryor to their conference season to more easily judge which is the best conference. (Sorry, SEC. Under my plan, you now must travel out of the South occasionally.) And we’ll just have to live without worrying about whether TCU could beat Texas or if Upper Arlington High School could beat Indiana University.
